Thee Parkside January 21, 2005 Review by Jake Thomas I’ll be damned if The Mothballs weren’t just what the doctor ordered for me on this fine night. Sloppy, raucous, and fun garage rock the way it is supposed to be played, these guys brought an instant smile to not only my face but pretty much everyone else at Thee Parkside that night. I’ve known the drummer JJ for a while but this was the first time I was checking his band out, a fact which only serves to bum me out as I think back on the shows I’ve probably missed out of sheer ignorance. Part of the glee this band produces might be the effect of how young they are – outside of JJ, who is probably in his early thirties, the rest of the band are barely out of their teens (if even that). I took to calling them Dad & the Kids, but JJ had an even better name for his crew – Jason & the Minors. All of the band was plenty funny with the banter and what not, which always makes and performance better in my book. There were also a bunch of covers, most of which I forget now but I do remember there was a Monks song scattered in there somewhere. I’ll certainly be checking them out more in the future, this band is good for my constitution. --- ©2005 playinginfog.com |
