Lower 48 / The Yellow Press
40th Street Warehouse

Review by Jake Thomas

Ahh, more 40th Street goodness, they keep coming through with the awesome shows. I could complain about them always booking too many bands for each one, but it's probably better to have too many as opposed to too few. For the sake of this review, there were only two bands at this show: Lower 48 and The Yellow Press.

Lower 48 were the reason I came to the show, and they played first. Despite some technical problems with one of the bassist's pedals, they sounded great. The set was short and to the point and packed lots of punch (and I mean this both figuratively and literally, because not only did they really rock out, but I enjoyed myself a Hawaiian Punch while they were doing so). This band has really been growing on me more and more each time I see them, and I'm looking forward to their split EP with Replicator that they have coming out soon. Like a tasty cheese, Lower 48's brand of mathy post-punk music only gets better with age.

The Yellow Press were the next group up to bat, and I stuck around to check them out. Verdict: not too shabby. If someone told me this crew was on tour out of Brooklyn, I don't think it would even make me flinch. Dancy post-punk music in the vein of the Liars or a less irritating Hot Hot Heat. The singer stumbled through the crowd and got up in people's faces now and again, most of whom seemed to already be friends with the band. My guess is that he performs like this all of the time, but it's hard to say given the context here. It wouldn't surprise me to find that a year from now these gents have quite a following, as I could really see their sound going over pretty well with the more mainstream indie music fans; the trick is just getting them to listen in the first place. The Yellow Press are a fairly young band, and I'll be curious to follow the trajectory and sound of their band as time progresses. It could get better and it could get worse, but right now they sound a-ok to me.
