Justin Herman Plaza July 19, 2001 Photos So while Grandaddy slept into the afternoon, we mere mortals showed up at work post-Webby Awards in a fairly sorry state. After spending the day sucking down cokes and ibuprofen, we sallied forth for a free outdoor concert held right after work at Justin Herman Plaza. (Location of the infamous U2 Free Show where Bono got it into his head to spray paint "Rock'n'Roll stops traffic" on his surroundings, thus effectively ending live rock music at the Embarcadero for a decade. Nice one, genius.) Part of the "Defy The Elements Tour, this show was a thinly veiled promotional moment for Snapple's "Elements" series of fruit drinks. Elements looked like chilled lava lamps both in color and size. They had names like Fire, Volcano, and Diet Air. Oh, and they were free. There was just one hitch: the last thing anyone in San Francisco wants to drink outdoors near the water as its getting dark is an icy cold beverage. The folks at Intel got us liquored up at the Webbys! What gives? We're adults...surely Snapple makes a beer product? Coz if we're going to be led like sheep to the Corporate Slaughterhouse, we'd like it to be a pleasant journey. Anyway. If we were tired, the band was probably exhausted. A few extra hours of sleep was certainly no remedy for what amounts to roughly 2.5 years on the road. We were actually surprised they could still stand. Somehow, they turned out as fine a performance as any other we've seen in spite of severe travel fatigue. Lots of local bands plus many members of the sf_indie list were spotted on the grandaddylandscape. There was an unmistakable feeling of introspection at the close of this show, and the Wuthering Heights-type weather system above us wasn't helping any. Sometimes music makes us want to sit and think. This was most certainly one of those times.
