Edinburgh Castle March 9th, 2001 Review by Squid We turned Friday into a double header, pre-empting eX-Girl at the BOTH by stopping off at the Castle to check out St. Andre, a local band that had been highly recommended by Matthew after he saw them open for Blonde Redhead. Seeing a show at the Castle is akin to something at Cafe DuNord: there's limited seating and a not-so-elevated stage, so you need to either get there early or be willing to be a jerk and shove your way to the front with a full pint of beer to see the band in question. And while Daz really liked them, Squid is fairly certain that she has a new favorite pet band, a la her love for The Aislers Set. There are all sorts of ways to defend it, but the answer is really her continued bereavement for Polvo. St. Andre have the math-rock aesthetic going on, but not so much that it's overly nostalgic. Most importantly, their sound is driven by quite possibly the world's coolest chick drummer. It's not just a gender novelty thing, either. Sara Lund from Unwound got nothing on her, folks. Please go and see them if for this reason only. We were notified of this show by our pals on sf_indie. When he's not recommending bands, Matthew likes to drink at The Lucky 13 |
