Spoon

Review by Jake Thomas

Ahh, good ol' Spoon. There's plenty to talk about when it comes to these guys - Austin roots, screwed by the majors, so on and so forth, but most people already know that story. All that really matters is that they were playing here in SF tonight, touring in support of their new album on Merge Records, 'Kill the Moonlight' (which has seen many, many plays in my CD player since it came out). They did not disappoint - playing a wide assortment, both old and new, including some favorites such as 'Car Radio', '30 Gallon Tank', and 'Johnathan Fisk', my favorite from the new album. The old songs sounded just as great as ever, and they managed to bring that brittle intensity from the new album onto the stage as well. I gotta admit though, I was looking forward to hearing them play 'Stay Don't Go' - if for no other reason than to see if anyone in the band would produce the beatbox sounds that stand in for the percussion on the album. In addition to the songs, Britt seemed to bring a swagger with him that matches the rock sounds that are coming from the stage. Probably wouldn't hurt if he brought a sandwich with him next time though - that is one skinny man.
