Rogue Wave / Invid
Make-Out Room

Review by Jake Thomas

Daz talked me into going to this show... the fact that the Make-Out Room is so close to my house, and I didn't have shit else going on that night, I thought why the hell not. She wanted me to check out Rogue Wave, who I didn't know anything about but was told they play sweet pop music. I like this sort of stuff well enough, so yet another good reason to go.

Rogue Wave were first up. Daz was right - pretty pop music. Mostly mellow, but they did play a couple of corkers, which I liked the best. More often than not though, I like my pop music to be pretty upbeat. Rogue Wave reminded me of a lot of the great pop music from the early to mid-nineties. Bands such as Dillon Fence, The Connells, Buffalo Tom...shit, even a little like the radio friendly pop music of those days (which was pretty decent by radio terms) such as Gin Blossoms and Toad the Wet Sprocket. Not tat they really sounded like any of the bands, but just had somewhat of the same feel to their music. Also, the band contains one Mr. Golden Gram, whose album you should pick up if you ever run across it. I don't know if he's still doing any of his solo stuff, but it would be great to see a show where he plays a set of that material to go along with Rogue Wave.

I was going to leave after Rogue Wave played, but I got caught up in shooting the shit with some friends and before I knew it the next band was playing. Invid is their name, and I don't really know much about them other than I enjoyed their set pretty well. They came out of the block with two really great songs, and the rest I would just classify as good. The first song sounded like it could be a Clash cover. I love the Clash, so this perked my ears right up. After that, they played a great little pop gem that reminded me a lot of Built to Spill because of the guitar player's use of the slide. After that, I couldn't really get the BTS comparison out of my head, although they were no where near as jammy sounding as BTS can be. On top of that, Daz thought that the singer looked like he could be Rob Crow's younger brother, and he even sounded a little like him too. Anyways, they had a decent sound and I'll have to keep my eyes open for future shows by these cats.
