"...And if a ten-ton truck kills the both of us, to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die..."
Stephen Patrick Morrissey

A Smiths cover bands was certainly intriguing enough to drag us out on a Monday night. Over chilly pints of Poppy Jasper*, we tentatively decided that The Nguyens were so-named because Nguyen is a common Asian name...sort of like Smith. Right?? Right?! Probably not, but we felt pretty proud of ourselves.

In true form, "Morrissey" was appropriately geared in huge pompadour, horn-rimmed specs, blazer with rolled cuffs, cuffed jeans, white socks, the works. "Marr", in typical fashion, kept to himself, pausing only don his large aviator sunglasses when the proper moment arose. "Rourke" played admirably in the face of a fan-sustained injury. Coolest of all, "Joyce" was suddenly...female.

They started off with "Last Night I Dreamt..." and proceeded to reel around the fountain for the better part of 2 hours. It took a few songs for Mozza's voice to warm up, but by the time we hit 'William, It Was Really Nothing' it was perfect. How the hell could anyone sing like that for 2 hrs?! How could anyone *dance* like that for two hours? People were weeping, laughing, and someone even threw themselves on stage (which is bloody hard to do at the Hemlock), it was madness. Squid is still mad at Daz for not giving up her lighter during 'How Soon Is Now'. A spot-on 'Big Mouth' was their triumphant finale.

Throughout, the Nguyens performed with just the right hint of irony to keep everyone singing and laughing. We loved it. The only thing better would be a double bill with Psychocandy. We're working on it.

*Squid's hometown beer, dontcha know.
