Review by Jake Thomas

I’m sorta dumbfounded as to what I should say about Animal Collective. I walked in and they were already playing what turned out to be one long song for their entire set. It is definitely psychedelic, lots of pedals and very warped sounding; the vocals, and everything else for that matter, was run through some sort of effects. At first, I didn’t dig it so much, it was more grating noise than music as far as I could tell. But then something clicked – maybe they hit a groove or my brain just fixated on one, but either way, it started sounding good to me. Not good enough that I’d want to own the record to listen to in my home, but decent for an opening band, and certainly different from what I’m used to seeing. I’d be willing to put large sums of money on the fact that this music sounds even better when you’re on drugs; either that or gives you the worst nightmares ever. Sounds like a science experiment If I can rope one of ne’er-do-well friends into it…

I missed
Múm last time around when they played at the Great American, out of town or at another show or who knows…Anyways, this time I made sure to be there to see and hear their beautiful sounds in person. Even though one of the twins is no longer with the group, I still expected it to be a good showing by the attractive Scandinavians; I was not disappointed. Their unique blend of electronic sounds and organic instruments, paired with the angelic voice of the singer, not only held me rapt but the audience as a whole. Lots of great instrumentation going on - including violin, banjo, accordion, melodica, on top of all of the usual suspects that you come to expect from a live band experience. Of particular note to me was what a bad ass the drummer was, making all of those crazy electronic beats come to life on his drum kit. Hot women, hot springs, hot nightlife and hot bands – is there anything that Iceland doesn’t have?
