Angles of Light (M. Gira) / Virgil Shaw and the Killer Views

Review by Squid

After dissolving the Swans, Michael Gira embarked on a series of different projects for the various types of music he was interested in pursuing. Body Lovers became his vehicle for instrumental ambient pieces, and Angels of Light was for more conventional songwriting. Sounding like Shriekback fronted by Johnny Cash, Gira performed mostly acoustic versions of all his songs to an obviously dedicated and adoring throng of darkly clad admirers. Squid would like to highly recommend one of Gira's other side projects, a collaboration with Dan Matz called "Things We Did". If you enjoyed this show, you won't be disappointed.

Joining Gira on this nationwide tour and only back home for a single day, Virgil Shaw was ready to rock to a home town crowd. This was one of the first shows to feature the entire Killer Views line-up: Matt on bass, Marc Capelle on keys, Danny Heifitz on drums, and introducing none other than Mr. Jim Fairchild on bass and guitar! That's right, our buddy from Grandaddy was kicking off his first night of the tour in style in SF. Songs like Surfboard Shaper caught the attention of first time listeners who had come to see Gira. Water Color made everyone sentimental and teary as it is so very good at doing. Damn that Virgil Shaw, he'll make ya cry everytime...but they're happy tears, we swear. Check him out if you've never done so.
