Hudson Bell / Pete Krebs
Make-Out Room

Review by Jake Thomas

I'm always excited for a show at the Make-Out Room. I can skate there from my house, plus the funky stage and lighting are a nice change from the normal band venue. Tonight was going to be a mellow, singer-songwriter affair, so I left my earplugs at home. It was also the cd release party for Pete Krebs new album, which I believe is called 'I Know It By Heart.'

Pete was going to play first. I got there a few minutes before he was to start, so I shot the shot with Daz and ate some fruit roll-ups I had put in my pocket before I left the house. And before you start making fun of me for eating such childish treats, let me say they were tasty. Once Pete started we got some seats and watched the show. Although I had only heard one or two of his songs, he kept me fairly entertained throughout the duration of his performance. I struggled to try and place what he reminded me of - the best I could come up with was something about his vocals reminded me of Van Morrison, but when I told this to Daz she looked at me like I was crazy and was probably right. She was claiming that at times he sounded very familiar to Roddy Frame's solo stuff, who was apparently the singer for Aztec Camera. Since I'm not familiar with any of that stuff, I'll have to defer to her on that one. Like I said though, fairly engaging stuff. Apparently, it was so engaging to the table in front of us that it drove a couple of the girls there to begin knitting. Knitting! This was a first for me at a live rock show, but hopefully not the last. And moreover, I'd like to put in a request for a nice blue scarf.

A few minutes after Pete finished, Hudson Bell took the stage. Since it was only him and no band, there was no elaborate set up time. He did have quite a swath of guitars though, with two acoustic and two electric. Interestingly enough, he actually apologized to the crowd about having so many guitars, which I thought was funny. He alternated between acoustic and electric songs, all of which were fine and good and enjoyable, but it would have been nice to hear more songs from his new album, which I just love. It seems to be the opposite of most performers, who focus too heavily on their new stuff at a show and ignore the rest of their material. It was still a good show, and look forward to the next time he plays, which I hear will be with his regular band.
