Bottom of the Hill June 4, 2003 Review by Sharon Senser Arriving at a Gold Chains show on the back of a motorcycle seemed entirely appropriate. The perfect start for an evening of good old-fashioned electro-influenced white boy hip hop! I missed the two opening bands because I was busy having my ass kicked at pinball, but as soon as Gold Chains took the stage I was ready to go, although sadly lacking the energy I should have had to fully enjoy such a performance! The man has a voice like gravel mixed with marbles - full of power, but sounding like it's about to disappear. He certainly knows how to rock a house full of indie kids and get their booties shaking. And you can't forget to mention the two lovely ladies who share the stage with him, singing and screaming beats, harmonies and rhythms while gyrating and flailing like robots caught on fire. You can't turn away. You can try, but it's just too mesmerizing. The whole affair was exciting, fun, and a bit surreal. I have a bit of a complicated relationship with hip-hop...I either love it, or hate it but it rarely really moves me, either musically or lyrically. All that said, you can bet if I knew Gold Chains was gonna be on a stage near me again, I would be in the audience, with more energy this time, ready for my butt to move. --- View Gold Chains photos from a previous show: February 15, 2003 @ Hemlock Tavern ©2003 playinginfog.com |
