Bottom of the Hill September 19, 2000 Review by Squid Fiver are part of the bumper crop (block that metaphor!) of Central Valley bands that have happily gained more notoreity as Modesto’s Grandaddy becomes a world power. (And as we all know by now, the 'daddys Jason Lytle produced Fiver's first album, etc.) They really came through live, thanks in no small part to Dave Woody’s superhigh tenor. Fiver have been labeled PowerPop sometimes, and we think that’s a disservice... in spite of the sweet lyrics, there’s definitely no shoegazing here. Plenty of complex hooks and a punk-esque delivery when there needs to be one. Ah, hell, we love ‘em. See them anytime you can. |
