Delgados / Crooked Fingers

Review by Jake Thomas

I like The Delgados, but to be honest I was here for one reason Å| Crooked Fingers Å| and everything else was just extra icing on the cake. And I canÅft say that I was surprised when it ended up not being Crooked Fingers proper, but rather just Eric Bachman himself. You never know what line-up youÅfre going to get with that man Å| nearly every show there is some sort of different arrangement there to entertain the crowd. IÅfve seen him by himself a couple of times, so despite the lack of a full sound I knew it would still be a damn good outing, and I couldnÅft have been more right. He played a number of songs that will be on their next album (out early 2005 I believe), and a few classics like ÅgBlack Black OceanÅh, ÅgJulietteÅh, and ÅgBroken ManÅh if I remember correctly. And surprisingly, no cover songs, which has to be a first. It was a short set, leave them wanting more and all that, but I was satisfied.

IÅfm always amazed at how full and professional the Delgados sound when they are performing. ThereÅfs no doubt in my mind that if more folks had just heard of them, theyÅfd be much, much more popular. But for now, we get to enjoy them in the comfy confines of Bimbos and I ainÅft complaining. This go around they didnÅft have the mini-orchestra with them, but the keyboardists helped out on the occasional cello and violin bit. It was a pretty subdued performance, but the crowd seemed to eat it up; the set was a mix of both old and new, and I wasnÅft the only one who got excited when they played ÅgAll You Need Is HateÅh. The music was beautiful, the crowd didnÅft irritate me for the most part, and the night was early, so I got to bed before I turned into a pumpkin. It was a fine night indeed.
