Bottom of the Hill November 3, 2000 Review by Squid Broadcast - the Birmingham quintet favorably compared to Stereolab by my mentors at KUSF who taught me everything I know 'bout music. As a matter of fact, they were supposed to be better than Stereolab. There was a serious buzz on this show: the Bottom was packed to the gills long before opening act Cinerama even started. Strictly speaking as an oxygen-dependant individual, this was not a good sign. By the time Broadcast hit the stage, it was damn near unbearable close to the stage, no chance of beer, or bathroom, or, in the case of fire, escape. Even though Squid liked the Broadcast albums at face value, she always appreciates it when a band tries something new live. Unfortunately, the sound was WAY too loud, even for the bells'n'gongs freak-out they were aiming for. The result was overpoweringly fuzzy blast that was really a disservice to their sound. Additionally, (and Squid can't remember this being an outstanding characteristic on the albums) Keenan kept doing this syncopated la-la LA, la-LA, la LAAAAAAAAAAA routine on each song that was just driving us nuts. Was she attempting to compensate for her voice being lost in the blaring mix? It's back to the albums for us.
