Review by Jake Thomas

This was a grand show of local proportions lots of good local bands coming together to play a Bands Against Bush fundraiser that was also acting as the birthday party of one of the members of Replicator, Conan Neutron. He was heard expressing that this was the best birthday ever, and it was a damn good time lots of friends, lots of drunkenness, and lots of good music what more could you want? Cupcakes, you say? Well they had those too!

First band on the bill was Cartographer. And by band, I mean Ben, bassist for Replicator, and his lovely assistant the drum machine. He was wearing a stunning ensemble that looked not unlike the jumpsuits that a garbage man might wear, but this was not fashion over function, no sir. The music was pure rock, sounding pretty similar to the old, rocking version of Trans Am, or Jimmy Fountain if youve ever heard him. I really liked it a lot actually, as Ive always been a fan of this style of instrumental rock. hopefully he will record an album sometime in the near future so that home listening enthusiasts such as myself can have a good time at their house with something other than video games and porn. Wait, did I say that but loud?

After Cartographer was Truxton, formerly known as Hansi. They were still called Hansi back when I saw them last they still play the same songs, but they have a new drummer now to replace Francis (From Monument to Masses). Great catchy, emotive pop songs about the typical things I guess, I don't pay much attention to lyrics. I know they have a song about a boat or something, I dunno. All I know is that they are great to sing along to in the car, so long as you dont get embarrassed when you pull up to the stop light and get busted by a carload full of teenage girls.

Finally I saw Black Ghost. I'd been promising Lisa who drums for them that I would come check them out for ages and I finally got a chance. I've heard Conan compare their sound to Unwound and I could definitely see that. Plus got the hott girl drummer/boy singer combo thing going on just like the Moggs, another great local act. There were a few snafus from time to time, but the great thing about this show is almost everyone there was friends and people were just having a dandy time and not giving one shit about that sort of stuff. not to be all hippy, but the love was in the air and it was thick, and the great music just helped set the atmosphere. Too bad all shows cant be this comfortable and fun to go to.
